World Heritage as a tool for Natural and Cultural Resources Management of the Iraqi Marshlands

The Iraqi Ministry of Environment with the support of UNEP and UNESCO has implemented a project entitled "World Heritage as a tool for Natural and Cultural Resources Management of the Iraqi Marshlands", to address the priority need for the management plan of the area that reflects the unique historical, cultural, environmental, hydrological, and socio-economic characteristics of the area, in particular by utilizing the World Heritage inscription process.

The overall development goal of this project is to ensure sustainable development of the Iraqi Marshlands, reflecting the unique historical, cultural, environmental, hydrological, and socio-economic characteristics of the area, in particular utilizing the World Heritage inscription process as a tool to develop and implement a management framework.

The Marshlands of Southern Iraq are currently proposed for nomination under the World Heritage Convention as a National Serial Mixed World Heritage Site for culture and nature, whereas the Nomination Dossier for Inscription of the Property on the World Heritage list has been submitted to the World Heritage Committee in Paris / UNESCO center where it is being revised to be delivered then to the advisory bodies to evaluation the importance of the site, especially that it is the first serial and mixed site in the Arab Homeland within the world heritage sites.

The implementation of the project has resulted developing of about several studies/ reports, as follow:

• Nomination dossier of the Iraqi Marshlands for Inscription on the World Heritage list
• The Consolidated Management Plan of the Iraqi marshlands
• Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management in the Iraqi Marshlands (En & Ar)
• Development of the management planning framework for ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation in the Iraqi marshlands (En & Ar)
• Survey of Bibliography
• Regional red list assessment of selected species in the Iraqi marshlands
• Archeological survey of the marshlands of southern Iraq

This project has been implemented by the National Committee for the Environmental and Cultural Management of the Ahwar and their World Heritage Nomination chaired by:
